Stoichiometric (Air-Fuel Ratio)
When the ratio of air and fuel is precisely correct, it is referred to as stoichiometric. It is critical that the air-fuel ratio be stoichiometric in order for the mixture to be burned with maximum efficiency and for the catalytic converter to operate with maximum efficiency. For gasoline engines, the stoichiometric ratio is approximately 14.7:1 (air to fuel by mass).
