Glossary Term
Timing Belt / Timing Chain
A belt or chain that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft(s) so that engine valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes. A timing belt is made of reinforced rubber and requires periodic replacement; a timing chain is metal and typically lasts longer but can stretch over time. Failure of either component can cause catastrophic engine damage in interference engines.
