U-Joint & Double Cardan Joint Replacement

Universal joints are the critical pivot points in your driveshaft that allow it to transmit torque through changing angles as your suspension moves. When a u-joint fails, you'll typically hear a clunk when shifting from park to drive, feel a vibration at highway speed, or notice a squeaking that disappears when the vehicle is moving faster. Ignored long enough, a seized u-joint can snap the driveshaft entirely — and a loose driveshaft dragging on the pavement at 60 mph is a genuine safety emergency.

At Apex Automotive in Gilbert, we approach every driveline vibration or clunk with a full inspection rather than just throwing parts at it. David Jr. checks every u-joint in the driveshaft assembly — front, rear, and the double cardan joint (also called a CV-style joint) at the transfer case on 4WD trucks and SUVs like the Ford Bronco, F-150, Jeep Wrangler, and GM Silverado/Sierra. Double cardan joints are more complex than standard u-joints because they use two u-joints with a centering ball socket to handle steeper operating angles, and they require proper phasing during installation to avoid vibration.

We use Spicer and equivalent OE-grade replacement u-joints — not the cheapest parts-store option. The difference matters: a quality greaseable Spicer u-joint with full-circle clips will outlast a pressed-in economy joint by years, especially in Arizona where heat accelerates bearing wear and dried-out grease. Every u-joint replacement includes checking driveshaft runout and balance, inspecting the transmission output seal and differential pinion seal for leaks, and verifying the carrier bearing condition on two-piece driveshafts.
